Fishing Trips in Maine’s Grand Lake Stream Region
The Grand Lake Stream area in eastern Maine is known for the finest Landlocked Salmon, Lake Trout, Brook Trout and Smallmouth Bass fishing found anywhere. For over 100 years, anglers from around the globe have visited this area to experience fantastic streamer, nymph and dry fly fishing in Grand Lake Stream and traditional ice-out streamer fishing for Landlocked Salmon on East and West Grand Lake.
Ice-out Streamer Fishing on East & West Grand Lake
Early in the spring immediately following ice-out, Landlocked Salmon, Lake Trout and Brook Trout can be found near the surface aggressively feeding on smelts. Trolling traditional hand-tied streamer flies just inches below the surface provides fast action from ice-out through the month of May. These hard hitting and tough fighting game fish are a blast to catch, often jumping several feet into the air, testing any anglers abilities. The early season fishing can often be cold and damp but the fishing action makes it worth braving the elements.
As an added bonus we often prepare a shore lunch. There is nothing like a hot meal and coffee, prepared by your guide, to warm you up.
Fly-Fishing Grand Lake Stream
Grand Lake Stream is considered by many as the finest Landlocked Salmon fishery in the world. One simply can not discuss Landlocked Salmon fishing without mentioning this 3 mile stretch of moving water, draining from West Grand Lake into Big Lake. This fly-fishing-only stream provides opportunities for the beginner fly-fishermen to the most experienced.
From the “Dam Pool”, near West Grand Lake to the “Meadow” in the lower part, the river is a collection of well known and named pools all with differing characteristics. Fluctuating water levels, controlled by the dam, also make each visit to Grand Lake Stream unique and memorable, with fish always on the move. When the bite is on, the fishing is nothing short of fabulous.
During spring and heavier water flows, streamers are very effective, imitating smelts. As waters warm, nymphs and dry flies provide fast action. Grand Lake Stream is open to fishing from April 1st through October 20th, with great fishing all season long.
